Owatonna, Minnesota's History

Owatonna, Minnesota, has a rich history that dates back to 1854 when settlers with English roots founded it. The town was named after the Straight River, which in the Dakota language is Wakpá OwóthaÅ‹na. Owatonna was incorporated as a town on August 9, 1858. In 1883 and 1884, Owatonna hosted the Minnesota State Fair. In 1885, Owatonna was chosen over 16 other cities as the State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children site.

From 1898 to 1940, Steele County was the Butter Capital of the World. Federated Insurance was founded in Owatonna in 1904 as Minnesota Implement Mutual Fire Insurance Company. The National Farmers' Bank, designed by Louis Sullivan, was completed in 1908. During 1944 and 1945, more than 200 German prisoners were held at a prisoner-of-war camp in Owatonna.
