On November 2, 1949, the residents of Crystal Lake voted to incorporate the City of New Hope. The city's first mayor was Ben H. Sanborn, and the first city council consisted of five farmers: Clarence Hamilton, Elmer Johnson, Bert Laninga, Ralph Neely, and Henry Schultz.
